The Portal to The Island of Fire

I want to write a few blog posts about my weekend in Fire Island, and I figured what better way to open the series than with a look at some of the amazing entryways I saw on the island. So, without further adieu here are some beautiful gates to illustrate my introduction to the island:

Fire Island is off the coast of Long Island, NY and is an alternative to the Hamptons for a number of reasons: its faster to reach, way more casual, and slightly less pretentious. The island is extremely narrow, at most a 5 minute walk from one side to the other, but about 17 miles long. So its divided into a number of tiny village communities each with very different identities. Most famous is Cherry Grove the debaucherous gay party town, which is a few towns down from Ocean Beach where we were staying with my parent's friend Holly.

On most of the island bikes are the main form of transportation, cars are forbidden and the constant flow of children on bicycles or guiding little red wagons lends the island a quaint calmness. The homes are snuggled close together (one morning the neighbor's alarm clock woke me up!), which inspires a neighborly camraderie among the homeowners. Obviously Fire Islander's have learned from Frost that "good fences make good neighbors", and that some fancy gates never hurt anyone either:
